Brooks Kushman, an intellectual property law firm based in Southfield, has opened a new office in the Washington D.C. Metro area.

Company officials say the Alexandria, Va. office, located at 1940 Duke St., was selected because of its close proximity to the United States Patent and Trademark Office and Washington, D.C.

Lissi Mojica, who will serve as a principal of the office, will work to expand the firm in the greater-Washington D.C. area.

Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Mojica was a principal with multinational law firm Dentons’ IP and technology practice group. She has also worked with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where she was responsible for the creation of the Central Reexamination Unit.

Her practice focuses on post-grant proceedings, including preparing, analyzing and prosecuting inter partes reviews, post-grant reviews, covered business method proceedings, reexamination proceedings, reissues, and interferences.

“I am confident (Mojica) will serve as a strong leader as we expand our firm to the Washington, D.C. market, and will bring a valuable new perspective to our clients around the country,” says Mark Cantor, president of Brooks Kushman.

Mojica is a member of the Intellectual Property Owner’s Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Intellectual Property Owners Association, and chair of the PTAB Appeals Committee in the newly formed PTAB Bar Association.

She holds a Master of Business Administration from Marymount University in Virginia and a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida.

Brooks Kushman has offices in Michigan, California, and Virginia, and represents clients nationally and internationally in protection, enforcement, and monetization of IP. The firm employs more than 90 intellectual property professionals specializing in various technical disciplines.
