Southfield Picks OHM Advisors to Lead Redevelopment of Former Northland Center Mall

The city of Southfield has selected OHM Advisors — an architecture, engineering, and planning firm with offices in Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee — as master planner for the redevelopment of the former Northland Center mall.

The city purchased the 114-acre mall property for $2.4 million, located at Eight Mile Road and the Lodge Freeway, last December, with plans to demolish the mall and remediate the site before selling it to a private developer.

“We think the (OHM Advisors’) experience with large, mixed-use projects aligns closely with our ultimate vision for the property that will provide revitalized retail, residential, office, and community space on the current site,” says Southfield Mayor Ken Siver.

The city of Southfield selected OHM Advisors through a competitive bidding process from a field of seven finalists. The finalists each developed a conceptual market-driven master redevelopment plan.

Siver says OHM Advisors, founded in Detroit in 1962, has diversified and expanded its footprint in recent years with clients that include Fortune 500 companies, cities and townships, retailers, and private developers nationally.

Siver says an 8-foot fence is now being erected around the perimeter of the site.

Additionally, the city announced Marshall Fredericks’ famed The Boy and Bear sculpture will be relocated from the Southfield Department of Public Service’s yard to the Southfield Public Library today. The sculpture was previously located in the former Northland Center mall.

Once the sculpture arrives at its new home at the library, it will be lifted by crane and passed through a window for permanent placement in the tower lobby.

A VIP reception that includes an unveiling of The Boy and Bear sculpture, as well as live music and hors d’oeuvres, will be held on May 19.
