Yuzu Sushi Co., a fast-casual sushi restaurant offering large, handheld sushi rolls, will open along Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak by the end of the month.

“I just liked the concept of being able to go somewhere and get sushi for under $15,” says Mario Gojcaj, owner and operator of Yuzu Sushi. “Normally, you’re guaranteed to spend (at least) $15 to $20. I think it would be a great option for everyone here in Michigan that loves sushi. It’s quick, affordable, really good quality sushi that is handheld and on the go.”

Gojcaj, who most recently worked at Downtown Louie’s Lounge in Detroit and helped open Forest Grill in Birmingham with Chef David Gilbert, says he got the idea for sushi rolls, also known as sushi burritos, from restaurants he visited in California like Sushirrito. He says Yuzu Sushi, to be located at 32832 Woodward Ave., just south of 14 Mile on the east side, will offer rolls with ingredients such as tuna, avocado, braised pork shoulder, salmon, and shrimp.

“The other part of the menu is going to be poke, a Hawaiian fish salad that’s traditionally served as either an appetizer or as a shared family meal,” Gojcaj says. “There’ll be a choice of either tuna or salmon and it’s cubed up almost like a tuna tartare. It’s really fresh, so it’s just chopped-up fish tossed in a nice dressing served over some rice with a little bit of seasoning and a little bit of seaweed.”

He says the 1,700-square-foot restaurant will offer 32 seats and plans to open Jan. 27. Gojcaj says he has plans to expand by opening additional sushi restaurants in metro Detroit.
