Southfield-based Lawrence Technological University will now offer its new associate of science degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering technology at Focus: HOPE’s training facility in Detroit.

“(Lawrence Tech) provides a valuable and highly marketable degree to these young men and women who are so worthy of investment and greater opportunity,” says Virinder Moudgil, president and CEO of Lawrence Tech. He says upon completion of the associate degree, students will have the opportunity to transfer to the university’s bachelor program.

The degree is designed to offer students an understanding of thermal and fluid mechanics, statics, dynamics, and computer graphics. Moudgil says mechanical engineering technicians are involved in the design, development, testing, or manufacturing of products, equipment, or machinery. The credits can also be applied to the Bachelor of Science in engineering technology program.

“The Lawrence Tech partnership is among the many programs in training and education that are helping students at Focus: HOPE enter the workforce with high levels of skills and competence,” says William Jones Jr., CEO of Focus: HOPE.

Focus: HOPE, founded in 1968, offers programs to solve issues including inadequate education, economic disparity, and hunger. The nonprofit also has partnerships with Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, Oakland University, and the University of Detroit-Mercy.

Lawrence Tech, founded in 1932, offers degrees in business, engineering, computer science, and physics, among other programs. The university also expanded its presence in Detroit with the opening of a $7-million design and technology center in the city’s Midtown district in October.
