Granite City Food & Brewery, a Minneapolis-based restaurant chain offering signature beers and upscale casual food, today offered a media preview of its new restaurant located within the General Motors Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. The restaurant opens to the public Wednesday.

“What we found at the Renaissance Center was a great space, plenty of traffic, and a lot of exciting things going on in Detroit,” says Jeff Dean, COO of Granite City Food and Brewery. “The Detroit location is the largest of our 35 restaurants around the country.”

Dean says the 16,000-square-foot restaurant, located at the northwest corner of the Renaissance Center, has 450 seats, along with a 120-seat patio overlooking Jefferson Avenue. He says the restaurant includes a large private dining area with a bar that can be separated into three rooms. He says the space features warm wood accents and polished stone accents.

The eatery will offer a selection of craft and specialty beers, and the location has the capacity to ferment up to 450 gallons of beer at one time, including a beer unique to the location called the 48243 Double IPA (the number is a reference to the ZIP code used at the RenCen, which serves as the world headquarters of General Motors Co.)

Granite City Food & Brewery, founded in 1999, now has 35 restaurants in 14 states. Granite City entered the Michigan market in 2012, and has restaurants in Troy and Northville Township.

Last month, GM announced plans to launch a large-scale renovation of the RenCen, which will include a giant LED screen overlooking Jefferson Avenue and an addition that will extend the section of the front complex which houses the People Mover station to Jefferson Avenue.
