In an effort to expand its southeast Michigan presence, Varnum, a Grand Rapids-based law firm, has opened a new office in Ann Arbor. The expansion comes less than a year after the firm opened a downtown Detroit office.

The new office, located in the Brauer Building at 300 N. Fifth Ave., features a suite of offices, conference and reception areas, and room for growth.

In addition to working with small businesses and startups, Dave Khorey, chairman of Varnum, says the firm has strong relationships with investor, municipal, and higher education clients in the area.

“Our work in the Ann Arbor area has increased significantly in recent years,” he says. “A large part of that work involves our startup and emerging companies practice and the business investment sector. We believe Ann Arbor is one of the most exciting technology communities in the state if not the country, and it makes sense for Varnum to have a strong presence here.”

Thomas W. Forster, a real estate and corporate attorney, and Christopher A. Ballard, who practices in the areas of estate planning and tax, will join the new office as partners.

Fifteen attorneys have joined Varnum’s three southeast Michigan offices in the past 18 months, and Khorey says the firm plans to continue to look for hiring opportunities and expansion of its client services in the region.

With offices in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Novi, Kalamazoo, Grand Haven, Lansing, Hastings, and now Ann Arbor, Varnum serves as counsel to businesses and institutions throughout Michigan and the Midwest. The firm’s southeast Michigan offices focus on tax practice, estate planning, and employment and litigation practices.
