Nigel Travis, CEO and chairman of Dunkin’ Brands (Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins), today announced that more than 20 stores will open within the next five years across the southeast Michigan region, including new locations in the city of Detroit.

“Detroit is one of the areas — now that we’re passed the recession — where we see real growth,” Travis says. “I’m personally invested and very attached to this area (because my wife is from Livonia). I think Detroit’s coming back. We think in the next few years, we’re going to open 20 stores. I’m personally looking to see if we could open even more. People love Dunkin,’ but there’s not enough (stores) in this area so we need to get greater penetration which will help us become even more successful.”

Based in Quincy, Mass., Travis was in metro Detroit today visiting the newly opened Dunkin’ Donuts at FCA USA (Chrysler) headquarters in Auburn Hills. Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants have also recently opened new shops in Farmington Hills, with locations in Warren and a second restaurant in Livonia opening within the next two months. Dunkin’ Donuts is known for its coffee, wide variety of doughnuts, and breakfast sandwiches.

He says the company plans to also focus on getting Dunkin’ Donut restaurants into the city of Detroit. The brand has two restaurants there now — at Wayne State University in Detroit’s Midtown district and at Comerica Park.

“We need to get more (restaurants in Detroit) — we have franchisees that are actually looking for sites,” Travis says. “Based on my personal observation, the city is coming back fast, and I’m excited about what I’ve seen with the condos and all of the building that’s going on down there.”

There are about 50 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in metro Detroit with more than 70 across the state, along with 40 Baskin Robins locations (which includes both standalone restaurants and those inside Dunkin’ Donuts locations)

“(Dunkin’ Donuts has) been here a long time but it’s never grown to the kind of density that we have in other places,” Travis says. He says in Boston, near the company’s headquarters in Quincy, there are 1,120 stores.

On a national level, he says Dunkin’ Brands, which has 8,400 restaurants in the U.S. today, hopes to expand to 17,000 restaurants within the next 15 years.
