Dow Automotive Develops New Bonding Method for Lightweight Vehicle Construction

Auburn Hills-based Dow Automotive Systems has added a new injection bonding technique to its composite bonding adhesive, which allows for more customizing capabilities and a wider application of carbon-fiber parts.

Injection bonding can be used to bond carbon-fiber parts to metal in side-frame applications along the roof. The carbon-fiber parts ensure stability of the passenger compartment in the case of a side-pole impact or rollover, as well as increasing vehicle stiffness.

Dow’s Betaforce composite bonding adhesive is designed to help address the challenge of integrating long carbon-fiber composite parts into the vehicle. Betaforce is being used in the Audi R8, the Lamborghini Huracan, and the BMW 7er series, among other vehicles.

Dow Automotive System’s new injection bonding technique enables a wider application of carbon-fiber parts in mixed-material assembly, supporting manufacturers’ lightweight strategies.

Dow Automotive Systems, a division of Midland-based Dow Chemical Co., is a provider of advanced materials for OEMs, tier suppliers, aftermarket customers, and commercial transportation manufacturers.
