Detroit Ecommerce Startup Vows Mattress Delivery at Lower Costs

A new Detroit startup, called Doze, promises to deliver mattresses straight to customers’ doors at a lower cost by using a direct-to-consumer online business model.

“Leveraging the web, we can provide a high quality mattress in an easy way,” says Brendan Rice, co-founder of Doze. “We’re building a company that serves the college student and recent graduate who wants a seamless buying experience and a high quality product.”

Rice says Doze mattresses are made with a three-inch layer of gel memory foam and a seven-inch layer of dense support foam and can be used with a box spring, slatted frame, and platform bed, or they can be placed directly on the floor.

The U.S. manufactured-mattresses range in price from $450 for a twin to $850 for a king, and come with a 75-day trial period.

Rice and co-founder Russell Suskind first thought of the idea in Detroit while working as Venture for America fellows, a program that places college graduates into technology companies. The company now has four employees and an office in Miami. The startup has sold $45,000 of product in beta testing and has raised a small amount of seed funding.
