The City of Auburn Hills has opened a co-working space, called CoWork @ TheDen, offering freelancers, small-business owners, and students workspaces with free access to the Internet.

“This type of organic networking creates a collaborative environment and provides the opportunity for reinvestment in the community as businesses grow,” says Auburn Hills Mayor Kevin McDaniel.

McDaniel says the 1,500-square-foot space, located in a reclaimed historical cabin at 3388 Auburn Rd., features ergonomic office furniture, reservations for conference rooms, free parking, electrical outlets at every seat, and access to a printer, copier, and scanner. The DEN has five rooms and two fireplaces.

The co-working space is near Oakland University and Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus. McDaniel says there are more than 35,000 college students from Oakland University, Baker College, Cooley Law School, and Oakland Community College taking classes in the area.

“Sharing a space with likeminded professionals creates a synergistic environment and flexible work station options that provide just the right balance of concentration and networking,” McDaniel says. “CoWork @ TheDEN provides the traditional office amenities every business needs without the distractions that come from working at home or in a coffee shop.”

The space is open to the public, although memberships are available for extended hours.

Another co-working space called The Office Coffee Shop, offering individual private offices for rent along with workspaces, opened in Royal Oak in the summer.
