Red Bull, along with professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, are partnering to bring a major skateboarding event to downtown Detroit's Hart Plaza in May that will showcase 21 of the world's best skateboarders.
"Detroit is an amazing city with a rich history," says Sheckler, entrepreneur and star of the MTV’s reality television series, Life of Ryan. "Skateboarding has passion and I want to use that to impact the Midwest and skate scene as a whole."
The event will feature two lanes, each with a unique set of features such as stair sets, rails, ledges, and additional features. Every skater will skate each lane once, and for the third run, competitors can select either lane to better their score.
"This is a start-to-finish contest, including an element of speed, with a very unique course design that allows each skater to express themselves," Sheckler says.
Confirmed skaters include Chris Cole, Torey Pudwill, Nyjah Huston, and Sean Malto.
The pre-qualifier takes place on May 8 and the finals will be held on May 9 at Hart Plaza. The competition will also be broadcast on NBC on Aug. 2.
