Sterling Heights-based Key Safety Systems has signed an agreement with Mobileye NV to produce a camera-based advanced driver assistance system that will be used in autonomous and other vehicles.
Jerusalem-based Mobileye NV is a developer of machine vision processing for camera-based drive assistance systems that will help enable safer driving through driver alerts and intervention, including such tasks as alerting drivers to potential problems, braking, keeping drivers in the correct lanes, and showing what’s in blind spots. The company is also working to launch hands-free driving system by 2016.

Key Safety develops and manufacturers automobile safety products such as airbags, steering wheels, and seat belts, and operates 32 facilities across the world including technical centers in the U.S., Germany, China, Japan, and South Korea.
At the end of 2013, Gov. Rick Snyder signed into law legislation that allows manufacturers to test self-driving cars as long as a human is monitoring from the driver’s seat and can take control of the vehicle if needed.
In January, Dearborn-based Ford Motor Co. CEO Mark Fields predicted autonomous vehicles could be introduced within the next five years.
