Rivian Automotive Inc., a developer of lightweight and efficient vehicles with operations in Livonia and Florida, will invest nearly $30 million to open a design and engineering facility in Dearborn, a move that will create more than 170 jobs.

“We are excited to be expanding in Michigan, and building upon the state’s great automotive DNA,” says R.J. Scaringe, CEO of Rivian Automotive. “Michigan provides a strong environment for high-growth, high-tech companies.”

On Monday, the board of the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $1.8 million performance-based grant for Rivian.

“Rivian’s commitment to Michigan reflects the great advantage of locating in the capital of automotive research and development,” says Steve Arwood, CEO of Michigan Economic Development Corp. “Michigan is at the forefront of innovation in automotive design and manufacturing, and Rivian is taking its place as a leading company imagining the next ‘automotive experience,’ which translates into making sure the state’s auto industry remains competitive far into the future.”

Arwood says Michigan was considered over potential locations in California and Florida, and was selected based on the density of automotive designers and engineers, proximity to the automotive supply base, and attractive business climate.

The city of Dearborn is considering initiatives to further support the project.

Rivian Automotive, founded in 2009, develops and manufactures efficient sports cars. The company was formerly known as Mainstream Motors Inc., and changed its name to Rivian Automotive in 2011.
