The District Export Council, a nonprofit corporation that plans trade educational activities, will host a two-day workshop on March 25-26 that focuses on international documentation compliance and the differences between the North American Free Trade Agreement and three new Free Trade Agreements with Panama, South Korea, and Colombia.
“It’s a workshop that’s going to provide practical information for exporters,” says Richard Carson, director of the East Michigan U.S. Export Assistance Center in Pontiac, which is part of the U.S. Commerce Department. “This workshop will benefit folks involved with international marketing, international sales, shipping, and logistics.”
Early registration for the $395 workshop, to be held at the former Federal Reserve Building in downtown Detroit, has been extended until Wednesday.
The workshop is split into two parts. The first day will introduce attendees to the new Free Trade Agreements, and will help attendees learn how to be in full compliance with all export regulations. The workshop also will help determine what products qualify for trade benefits.
Many companies expose themselves to NAFTA penalties, for example, even when the goods have low or zero duty, according to the District Export Council.
The second day of the workshop will give an overview of international documentation and will help attendees understand when and how to fill out out certain international documents including commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and dock receipts. Workshop leaders will go through each document step by step.
