Construction on a new senior living community in northwest Detroit is set to launch this spring, on Meyers Road between Six and Seven Mile roads. The project, slated to open next year, will be located just south of the Northwest Activities Center.

Dubbed Hartford Village, the residential campus addresses the city’s issue with outward migration, which Mayor Mike Duggan referenced at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s 2014 Mackinac Policy Conference, by retaining and attracting seniors to live in the city, say project officials.

“The city of Detroit needs more vibrant senior living communities like Hartford Village so that older adults have the opportunity to continue living in their neighborhoods,” says Frank Taylor, vice chair of the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church’s board of trustees, which has teamed up with the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan to develop the project.

When completed, Hartford Village will offer nearly 40 independent-living cottages and 45 apartments. In addition to creating temporary construction and permanent jobs, the new community will stimulate increased economic development in the surrounding neighborhood as businesses develop to serve the village’s more than 100 residents, Taylor says.

Most recently, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan awarded the community a $100,000 grant, which will help support technology and programming for senior residents with visual and hearing impairments as well as staffing to coordinate an array of senior services and programs that facilitate older adults aging in their community.

“Not only will this commitment positively impact the lives of the seniors served by Hartford Village, it will truly impact the entire community,” says Paul Miller, president of the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation, which currently has 25 senior living communities including continuing care retirement communities, subsidized senior housing, and market rate senior housing throughout the state.
