Gene Michalski, president and CEO of newly formed Beaumont Health in Royal Oak, today announced a new organizational structure for the group of health care systems formed last year, as well as naming the next level of top executives for the $3.8 billion not-for-profit health care association.

Meantime, Board Chair Robert Lenihan of Crittenton Hospital Medical Center, today announced the Rochester Hills-based hospital will join Ascension Health Michigan, following months of evaluating proposals from various health systems. Lenihan says a letter of intent has been signed to proceed with a 6-month due diligence process to complete the business evaluation and details of the transaction.

Ascension has a significant statewide footprint in Michigan, including St. John Providence Health System in southeast Michigan, Borgess Health in Kalamazoo, Genesys in Grand Blanc, St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw, and St. Joseph Health System in Tawas.

On the Beaumont Health front, the new entity includes Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Botsford Health Care in Farmington Hills, and Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn. Combined, Beaumont Health consists of eight hospitals with about 3,300 beds, more than 150 outpatient sites, 5,000 physicians, more than 33,000 employees, and nearly 3,500 volunteers.

“We’ve made considerable progress since our September launch through the dedicated work of our integration teams,” Michalski says. “This new structure will provide another collaborative framework to enhance our integration efforts as we begin to operate our business together.”

Michalski says the alignment of the association includes two councils. One will identify and implement integration strategies for electronic health record implementation and supply chain, and provide a forum to evaluate system-wide opportunities to improve quality of care and operations.

A second council, he says, will identify and implement strategies to ensure coordination of high quality patient care. The council will also review and integrate Beaumont Health’s current joint ventures and diversified businesses (such as nursing homes, home care, medical transportation, etc.) and provide a forum for discussing and reviewing new business opportunities.

The newly named Beaumont Health senior vice presidents include:

  • Dr. Malcolm Henoch, of Northville, senior vice president and associate chief medical officer, acute care
  • Dr. Leslie Rocher, of West Bloomfield Township, senior vice president, chief academic and clinical officer
  • Dr. Sam Flanders, of Bloomfield Hills, senior vice president, chief quality and safety officer
