Baker College, a private college with campuses in cities such as Allen Park, Auburn Hills, and Clinton Township, has launched two new welding programs at its Auburn Hills campus and five new health science, computer information, and manufacturing programs at its campus in Allen Park.

The programs at the Allen Park campus include a bachelor’s degree in cyber defense, associate degrees in hemodialysis patient care technician, advanced manufacturing technology, and mechanical technology, and a certificate in computer numeric controlled machinist.

“These new programs are the result of thorough needs analyses that identified career fields with growing employment opportunities in our community and across the state,” says Kristine Barann, president of Baker College of Allen Park. “These are all 21st century jobs that have been created or affected by advances in technology.”

Baker College of Auburn Hills will also launch two new welding certificate and associate degree programs in the fall 2015 semester.

“Though there is an increasing demand for trained welding specialists, employers are telling us they can’t fill current available positions,” says Peter Karsten, president of Baker College of Auburn Hills. “The Baker College programs will provide training for those who have interest in becoming a welding engineer, welding inspector, structural ironworker, custom vehicle designer, and metal art sculptor, among other welding professions.”

Karsten says the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that the 2014 mean annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was more than $40,000. Classes begin Sept. 28 and are held in the welding lab of Oakland Schools in Pontiac.

Baker College has more than 28,000 students enrolled online or in its multiple campuses across the state. Baker grants certificates and associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in more than 150 programs such as business, education, and information technology.
