The Baroudeur, an inaugural 100-mile non-competitive urban cycling event is coming to Detroit in August to raise money for scholarships for Wayne State University students in financial need.

“We designed The Baroudeur course to highlight the unique beauty of Detroit and its surrounding communities,” says Matt Lockwood, race director. “We’re going to take riders to places like Belle Isle, Lakeshore Drive in the Grosse Pointes, Palmer Park, and Grosse Ile before they cross the finish line where we will kick off a post-race party in the center of our Midtown campus.”

The race, to be held Aug. 22, was inspired by Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson, who wanted to combine his love of cycling and the need for scholarships into one fundraising event. The name comes from the French word for “fighter” and “warrior.”

Participants can choose from three different course lengths: 20, 55, or 62 miles. A $36 registration fee covers lunch, ride support, and free parking. All net proceeds from the event will go to support economically disadvantaged students at Wayne State.
