Seminars Planned to Help Small Businesses Secure Defense Contracts

Starting in June, the Velocity Collaboration Center in Sterling Heights will host a series of presentations about government contracting for small businesses in southeastern Michigan.

Logistic Specialties Inc. is teaming up with the Macomb-OU INCubator and the Michigan Defense Center, all of which operate from the Velocity Collaboration Center in Sterling Heights, to offer a series of presentations about government contracting for small businesses in southeastern Michigan.

“There are lots of manufacturers in the automotive industry that may want to expand in the (defense) market,” says Catherine Slatter, CFO of LSI, a Utah-based government-contract consulting firm that recently opened a satellite office in Sterling Heights. “We thought it was important for them to have the opportunity to learn about doing business with the federal government — most people don’t know where to start.”

Doing Business with the Department of Defense, which kicks off on June 17, will cover how to register and obtain certification to bid on federal programs, finding opportunities within the Department of Defense, and how to conduct a thorough market analysis. On June 19, the organizations will host Winning Federal Contracts as a Small Business, followed by three additional sessions — covering prime contractors, proposal management, and writing winning proposals — in the fall.

The Macomb-OU INCubator is operated by Oakland University, Macomb County, and Sterling Heights, while the Michigan Defense Center was founded by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. The organizations share a common goal of assisting small businesses within the defense sector.

“We are all committed to creating new jobs in Michigan,” says Sean Slatter, president and CEO of LSI, whose clients include Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics. “This training series is one element of our overall strategy."
