Freescale Semiconductor, which has an office in Novi, today introduced a new system that enables Ethernet connectivity for automotive infotainment, instrument cluster, camera, telematics, and rear-seat entertainment options.
The new application supports real-time data transport throughout the vehicle and replaces expensive digital technologies and other alternatives, says Dan Loop, automotive business development manager for Freescale’s microcontrollers group.
“The infotainment’s primary role is to intelligently connect the car and all of its subsystems to the driver and passengers’ world — enriching the driving experience and enhancing the safety of the vehicle,” Loop says. “Freescale’s new (system) helps automotive OEMs and their Tier 1 suppliers rapidly create and deploy automotive multimedia systems for this new paradigm.”
Loop says the system delivers Ethernet Audio Video Bridging, or AVB, solutions that “connect cars to their drivers, the cloud, and the rest of the Internet of things.”
The system — which will hit the market in the first quarter of 2015 — will be on display during the SAE Convergence Conference and Exhibition, being held today and Wednesday at Cobo Center in Detroit.
It will remain on display through Friday for the IEEE-SA Ethernet & IP @ Automotive Technology Day, which kicks off Thursday at Cobo Center.
