Just six months after opening, Marais of Grosse Pointe — owned by husband-and-wife duo David and Monica Gilbert — has been named Hour Detroit’s 2014 Restaurant of the Year.
“We rarely award Hour Detroit Restaurant of the Year to an establishment this young,” says Steve Wilke, editor of Hour Detroit. “However, David has an outstanding track record both locally and internationally.”
David Gilbert, executive chef, previously served in the same role at Forest Grill in Birmingham (a former recipient of the Hour Detroit award). He has 25 years of experience at Michelin-rated restaurants around the world. At Marais, his contemporary French-based menu changes every four to six weeks and currently includes lobster ravioli, white asparagus with a buttermilk pannacotta, and an olive-oil poached wild king salmon. Appetizers range from $17-24 and entrées from $32-38.
Christopher Cook, Hour Detroit’s chief restaurant critic, says “Marais has quickly and comfortably slipped into the robe of being one of the best — possibly even the best — in the area.”
Earlier this month, the Gilberts (Monica serves as general manger) began offering brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “The sole reason we opened up for brunch was because my wife and I love Sunday brunch. We think that every Sunday should start with champagne and eggs Benedict,” David Gilbert says.
