The 2015 Ford Mustang began production today at the Flat Rock assembly plant and — for the first time in its 50-year history — the iconic vehicle will be sold globally in 120 countries.
“Expanding its availability globally affords our customers around the world the opportunity to have a true firsthand Mustang experience,” says Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president of the Americas.
Ford celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original Mustang in April. The 2015 model will be adorned with a commemoration badge on the instrument panel that includes the galloping pony logo and the words “Mustang — Since 1964.” The new Mustang will be available in the U.S. this fall.
Hinrichs says the 2015 edition — the sixth generation of the popular vehicle — features all-new front and rear suspension systems, and will contribute to more precise steering control and enhanced ride comfort. A new perimeter sub-frame helps stiffen the structure while reducing mass, giving a better foundation for more predictable wheel control that will enhance handling, steering, and ride. The integral-link independent suspension at the rear is also all-new.
The Flat Rock assembly plant celebrated the 1 millionth Mustang built at the facility last year. The plant has undergone renovations as part of a $555 million investment by Ford, including the addition of a three-wet paint process, dirt deception, and laser brazing.
The factory, which also produces the Ford Fusion, has approximately 3,000 employees.
