Eight & Sand to Kick Off Creative, Business Community Classes in 2015

It’s been a busy season for Hamtramck-based Eight & Sand. Just weeks after the business complex welcomed primary anchor tenant Fowling Warehouse, the 90,000-square-foot venue has announced the impending launch of its first community class offering.

“It’s always fun to start the new year with new skillsets, new ambitions, and just kind of stepping out of your comfort zone,” says Ash Nowak, general manager of Eight & Sand. “The classes will look at the business end of creative things and the creative end of what seem to be business things.”

Health and wellness classes will include both traditional offerings, such as yoga, as well as a few other options, such as healthy eating for upwardly mobile professionals. Other choices will include grant-writing workshops, business classes (i.e. invoice and tax tips for freelancers), and sewing lessons.

The venue will also open its photography studio, which professionals and enthusiasts can also rent by the hour or day, for classes led by local photographers.

“We’ll be reaching out to professionals to come and teach here,” Nowak says. “It’s not just about empowering people to learn, it’s also about empowering people to teach. By doing that, we also build a really cool network of shared ideas and skillsets.”

Nowak says the education and events space staff is still working out the details, but plans to release a course catalog by mid-January. The first classes will begin at the end of next month.
