Attention Seniors: Continuing Care Retirement Community Breaks Ground in Bloomfield Hills

tDevelopment of a continuing care retirement community in Bloomfield Hills is underway at 41150 Woodward Ave., north of Opdyke. The 164,000-square-foot facility, expected to open in September 2015, will be the only CCRC in the Birmingham/Bloomfield area.

t“In the senior housing world, CCRC means that there are multiple levels of service available under one roof,” says Michael J. Damone, president of Cedarbrook Senior Living. “Typically, that starts with independent living, then moves on to assisted living, memory care, and skilled care.”

tThe building will include 146 units, while amenities include a wellness center, an on-site executive chef, a 1950s-style diner, a Napa-inspired family dining room, a movie theater, a salon and spa, and a 24-hour nurse.

t“(We will offer) an area we call couple’s care, which is unique in the market,” Damone says. “We’re seeing a lot of couples with disparate care needs, so they’re struggling to try and find a way to stay together. So what we’re doing is providing units that will look very much like independent living units but are licensed for assisted living.”

tThe Rev. Monsignor Anthony Tocco of St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic Church, located directly behind the Cedarbrook site, says the new facility will help in the retention of the community’s senior members.

t“Just like retaining young talent is important to the vitality of a community, so is keeping our seniors close to home,” Tocco says. “Our parish has been watching senior members move far away for years, and with them goes the wisdom, heart, and soul of our community. Cedarbrook will be a welcome alternative.”

tWhile pricing varies, independent living units will start at $3,500 per month, which includes utilities, heated underground parking, a meal package, and a one-bedroom/one-bath apartment.

tCedarbrook Senior Living has developed more than 80 independent living, assisted living, and memory care residences nationwide. The Bloomfield Hills location is the only site Cedarbrook owns in Michigan, although the company plans to submit an application for site plan approval regarding a Northville location in January.
