Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is displaying two giant pink ribbon light displays to illuminate’s 21-story downtown Detroit headquarters building throughout October to commemorate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encourage women to have regular mammograms.
Blue Cross has a tradition of spotlighting important causes and special events with light displays. The pink ribbons will remain on the building, illuminated each night, throughout the month of October to draw attention to breast cancer and remind the public of the importance of early detection.
Breast cancer and early detection facts:
- According to a Society for Women’s Health Research survey, breast cancer remains the single most feared disease among women.
- Most women know at least one person who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
- The National Cancer Institute reports a woman’s lifetime chance of getting breast cancer is one in eight.
- Survival rates for breast cancer patients are dramatically affected by early detection.
- According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent if the breast cancer is localized.
- While most women know that getting an annual mammogram is important, they may avoid or delay having one due to the perceived discomfort associated with the exam.
