Nicholas J. Bournias, D.D.S. Named to Michigan Board of Dentistry

LANSING— Gov. Rick Snyder has announced that Nicholas J. Bournias D.D.S. has been appointed to the Michigan Board of Dentistry. The 19-member board assists the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in overseeing and regulating the practice of more than 7,800 dentists, 10,400 dental hygienists and 1,600 dental assistants.

“These individuals, both appointees and reappointees, bring years of valuable experience to this board,” said Snyder. “I am confident they will effectively work to ensure the best quality of oral health services for all Michiganders.”

“It is an important honor to be selected by Governor Snyder and the Michigan Board of Dentistry,” noted Bournias. “I recognize the Board’s strong commitment to Michigan communities that our profession serves and look forward to working together.”

Nicholas J. Bournias, D.D.S., a native of Detroit, Michigan, is a 1990 graduate of the University of Detroit School of Dentistry and completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery four-year residency training in 1994 at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan.

Currently, Dr. Bournias is an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), the certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States and is recognized and approved by the Council on Dental Education of The American Dental Association. In addition, he serves on the Advisory Board of OMSNIC, a national professional liability insurance company servicing oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

At the present time, Dr. Bournias is the Co-Director of the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at Mott Children’s/Hurley Hospital, Flint, Michigan, and a member of the Ian Jackson Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Clinic at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association, Macomb, Oakland and Thumb District Dental Societies.

He is in private practice as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon/ partner in Michigan OMS PC, a Michigan-based OMS surgical practice with offices in Birmingham, Clinton Township, Richmond and West Bloomfield. Dr. Bournias also maintains surgical privileges at several level one trauma centers. His area of professional interest includes treatment of congenital dentofacial deformities in children.

In October, Dr. Bournias will be inducted as an American College of Dentists (ACD) Fellow during the organization’s convocation and annual meeting in San Francisco. Founded in 1920, ACD is the oldest major honorary organization for dentists founded to promote graduate education and to honor those who do “meritorious” work.

Dr. Bournias is a member of the Greek Orthodox community in the metropolitan Detroit area. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. He is married and the father of two daughters, ages ten and four.
