Karmanos Cancer Institute Adds New Leadership


Two physician scientists have taken over new leadership roles at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit.

Elisabeth Health, M.D. and Ulka Vaishampayan, M.D. Each will take on their new roles effective immediately.

Heath, of Bloomfield Hills, will lead the genitourinary oncology multidisciplinary team at the Institute. She will also continue to serve as medical director of the Infusion Center and leader of the prostate cancer research team at Karmanos. She has been an active clinical and scientific member of Karmanos since 2003 and is professor of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in molecular biology from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. and her M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

Vaishampayan, of Troy, has been promoted to director of the Phase 1 Clinical Trials Program at Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Eisenberg Center for Translational Therapeutics after serving as interim director for nearly two years. She will also serve as the new division chief for Solid Tumor Oncology within the Department of Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Vaishampayan has led the Karmanos Cancer Institute’s genitourinary multidisciplinary team since 2005 and has extensive clinical research expertise. She serves as the Charles Martin Endowed Chair for Cancer Research and is a professor of Oncology at Wayne State University.

She earned her Bachelor of Science at Fergusson College in Pune, India and  her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from  Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical School, also Pune, India.
