SEA LIFE Michigan Hires Displays Curator

AUBURN HILLS — SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium, a 35,000-sq.-foot aquarium attraction scheduled to open in early 2015 in Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, has hired Lucy Handel as displays curator.

In her new position Handel is responsible for preparing the aquatic environments for creature integration, and directing ongoing care and life support maintenance. Handel will also maintain displays and stock levels, lead internal and external education presentations and conservation initiatives, manage health and safety protocol, train staff members, and more.

Handel has been with SEA LIFE since 2009, previously serving as displays curator and SeaTREK manager or SEA LIFE Manchester, United Kingdom, as well as displays curator and senior aquarist for Sharkbait Reef at the Alton Towers Resort in Staffordshire, United Kingdom. Handel has extensive experience in tropical marine, ambient and fresh water life support systems, and is a certified SCUBA diving specialty instructor.

Handel holds a degree in marine biology for The University of Hull in North Yorkshire, England. Upon graduation, she received an award for Outstanding Contribution to The Centre for her diving education work with the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences. Lucy is also certified in aquatic husbandry, scuba diving and emergency first response.
