Health Education Center Names Investigator

DETROIT — The Michigan Area Health Education Center has named Ramona Benkert as grant investigator at Wyane State University for the U.S. Health Resources and Service Administration in Dec. The university established the center in 2010 representing disadvantaged youths for health care careers.

Previously, Benkert served as co-program director of the center for three years working to change primary care safety net settings to improve healthcare for vulnerable populations.

Benkert has also led local and regional clinical quality practice-based research, and inter-professional efforts in Michigan and the Midwest. Nationally she led practice improvement operations within nurse-managed clinical practices and has conducted research to improve practice and diversity in the workforce and has worked internationally to expand clinical education options for nurse practitioners.

Benkert is an associate professor in the College of Nursing at the university and has more than two decades of experience as an adult nurse practitioner. She also has a a faculty practice at the Juanita Reaves Free Clinic at the Joy Southfield Community Development.

Benkert is a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She earned a bachelor of science from the University of Detroit Mercy, and graduated as a primary care nurse practitioner from Wayne State University and earned a doctorate in nursing from University of Michigan.
