Though Detroit’s Bayview Yacht Club “is a little pea patch in the middle of the country,” Commodore Rob Amsler notes that it hosts the longest continuous-run, freshwater regatta in North America — the annual Pure Michigan Bayview Mackinac Race.

“We draw more than 220 sailboats (every July) from numerous classes, and there are 4,000 people directly tied to the crafts,” says Amsler, a family doctor. “When you add in all the families and tourists for all of our domestic and international regattas, that’s millions of dollars in economic impact.”

While some private clubs have struggled to stay afloat, Bayview, founded in 1915, has close to 1,000 members, and those numbers are growing. The reason: The club hosts up to seven regattas each year.

This year’s events included the second annual International Match Race for the Detroit Cup, held in early September and won by 2008 Beijing Olympic Gold Medalist Anna Tunnicliffe. The race drew sailors from Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United States, including professional bowman Matt Cassidy (standing in picture).

“We host more international races than other clubs of our size, and one reason is that our club owns many of the boats,” Amsler says. “That way, the sailors are on even footing, and they’re more likely to participate.”

Detroit-based private equity firm Huron Capital has announced that its portfolio company, Dallas-based Good Sportsman Marketing (GSM), recently completed two add-on acquisitions. GSM acquired Scent Web from Beaverton, Mich.-based A-Way Hunting Products Inc., and Eugene, Ore.-based Bullseye Camera Systems. The acquisitions represent the second and third add-on deals for GSM since Huron Capital’s initial investment in June 2016.

Varroc Lighting Systems Expands to Brazil to Grow Global Lighting Business

Plymouth Township-based Varroc Lighting Systems has announced an expansion into the Brazilian market, supporting the company’s global growth plans. The strategic expansion was made possible through a partnership with German company Merka Lang, with both companies now sharing a 66,000-sqaure foot facility in Sorocaba, where Merka Lang has been operating since 1998.
