For the 20th year, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan is asking the community to join more than 8,000 walkers and supporters May 15 for its annual Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo to fight kidney disease.

This year the foundation’s goals are high as they look to capture the ranking as the No. 1 Kidney Walk in the nation, beyond New York.

More than 65,000 walkers have taken part in the annual Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo which has raised $5.5 million since it first started in 1996. This year’s goals are to raise more than $600,000 to surpass the number of walkers and money raised at the New York Kidney Walk.

Organizers of the Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo hope to draw attention to the importance of early detection and kidney disease prevention, while raising funds in support of kidney patients and their families.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. May 15 and the Kidney Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Participants can register onsite on the day of the walk or online before the walk date. For more information or to register online, visit nkfm.org/walks or call Lisa Schutz Jelic at 800-482-1455, ext. 210. Registration includes parking, zoo admission, and activities and is $25 per person (over the age of 12) and $10 per child for ages 2-12. Kids under the age of 2 years old are free. Additional fundraising beyond the registration fee is encouraged. Participants who raise $100 or more receive a walk T-shirt.
