Pontiac, MI, June 30, 2010 – Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson announced that the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded the county its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for fiscal years 2010 – 2012. Oakland County previously garnered GFOA’s Excellence in Financial Reporting and Popular Annual Financial Report awards for this budget cycle as well.

“This trifecta of budget awards is yet another example of how Oakland County maintains the highest standards in all we do,” said Patterson. “I credit my Management and Budget Director Laurie Van Pelt and her entire staff and the Board of Commissioners for a job well done.”

In order to receive the budget presentation award, Oakland County had to satisfy the following nationally-recognized guidelines: The budget presentation must serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device, according to the GFOA.

“The fact that our staff can maintain a high quality of work during these challenging financial times speaks to their hard work and dedication,” said Van Pelt.

Oakland County has won the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award consistently since 1984. The county has received this recognition 13 times in a row because of its biennial now triennial budget.

“With the increased work load due to the prolonged and ongoing budget process, this was not an easy year,” said Tim Soave, Oakland County’s fiscal services manager. “I’m extremely proud of my Fiscal Services staff – not just for this award and the other two, but simply for keeping up with all the changing demands placed on them.”

County Executive Patterson is scheduled to present his budget address for fiscal years 2011 – 2013 to the Board of Commissioners at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 in the Board of Commissioners Auditorium, 1200 North Telegraph in Pontiac. The event is open to the public.

A GFOA representative will present Patterson and Board Chairman Bill Bullard with the budget award immediately before the budget address.  To view the current budget on the county’s website, go to http://www.oakgov.com/fiscal/info_pub/2010_budget.html.
