LIVONIA, Mich., June 15, 2009 – New 3D technology developed by Absolute Imaging, LLC, of Livonia, MI, is paving the way for advanced applications in medical, entertainment, manufacturing and defense industries. The new LifeVisionTM family of technologies is on display June 15-17 in booth #11 in the Innovation Expo at The National Summit, being held at the Marriott Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI.
LifeVision is a full-motion, laser-based optical system that displays interactive, stereoscopic images in real-time, without glasses. The heart of the system is an advanced technology called a Holographic Optical Element (HOE). The HOE is itself a holographic enhancement element, which enables images projected through it to be visually perceived as three dimensional.
In the medical field, the LifeVision system has already received rave reviews from doctors and medical technicians. LifeVision enables surgeons to look at a display and visualize human anatomy in its true-to-life 3D form without having to wear 3D glasses. The system was first tested by three Oakwood Heritage Hospital surgeons and their medical support team in Taylor, MI in March 2009. Physicians testing the new LifeVision family of 3D technologies at The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) meeting in Phoenix, AZ in April 2009 gave the newly developed prototype nearly perfect ratings in nine categories, including comfort, dexterity improvement, cutting, suturing, camera navigation, and robotics, as well as for technical improvement over existing 2D HD tools.
Comments such as “we could use this system now,” “this is so easy to use,” and “the realism is amazing,” were common refrains among the physicians at SAGES. Their comments echoed those of the Oakwood Heritage Hospital surgeons who praised LifeVision for its ease of use, ease of adoption, and added depth perception. Approximately two-thirds of all surgeries performed today still use a more traditional open approach and most of today’s laparoscopic and endoscopic surgeries are viewed on a flat, two-dimensional (2D), High Definition display.
Richard Kughn, long-time Detroit businessman and co-founder of Absolute Imaging, sees paradigm-changing benefits for LifeVision technologies in multiple industries. “Surgeons already recognize the added comfort and realism this technology provides for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS),” said Kughn. “LifeVision also applies to entertainment where glasses-free 3D presents new opportunities in gaming, home theaters and other areas. In manufacturing, it can enable faster and more precise inspections that can improve quality and lower costs. It can also bring new levels of realism for defense applications that depend on accurate images.”
