LANSING, Mich., May 5, 2009 — Today the Detroit Regional Chamber called on the Michigan legislature and Governor Jennifer Granholm to cut spending and immediately pass long term structural reforms to right-size Michigan’s budget.

“Unfortunately today’s action by the Governor and the legislature don’t get the job done,” said Richard Blouse, Jr., president and CEO, Detroit Regional Chamber. “The legislature and Governors action to simply fill holes with federal stimulus funds does not fix our structural deficit. By avoiding the problem in the current fiscal year, we are exacerbating the problem in the next fiscal year.”

“The Detroit Regional Chamber has suggested over $1 billion in cost-saving, long term reforms to our Corrections system,” continued Blouse. “Yet the legislature continues to deal with our budget problems in the short term. We are pushing our elected officials to implement these savings solutions, now.”
