Neumann/Smith Architecture Hires New Director of Design

Michigan design firm Neumann/Smith Architecture has announced the hiring of Leo Valentino Mendez Jr. as director of design.

To his new role, Mendez brings more than 20 years of experience and will lead the firm’s creative team with an emphasis on elevating design, innovation, and the client experience.

“As our firm continues to grow, we seek talented individuals who will help strengthen our teams and explore new levels of creativity and innovation,” says Joel Smith, president. “Leo is undoubtedly that type of design leader. His talent will play a key role in elevating design vision throughout our firm.”

With a background in master planning and conceptual design for retail, urban planning, mixed-use, and adaptive re-use and renovation projects, Mendez also brings planning, management, and design experience.

He holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy. Additionally, he is a member of the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Boards (NCARB), and International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Mendez is a registered architect in Michigan and Arizona.

Neumann/Smith Architecture is celebrating its 50th year. The firm has received more than 200 awards from the architectural community, with multiple features in the international architectural press. The firm is headquartered in Southfield and has a design studio in Detroit. Neumann/Smith specializes in architecture, historic preservation, planning and interior design for corporate and municipal offices, mixed-use developments, multi-unit housing, parking structures, commercial and retail centers, and higher education facilities.
