BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center is promoting classes, workshops, exhibits, and special events for May. The newest exhibits will run May 3 – June 16. The opening reception will be May 3 from 6 – 8 p.m at the center.

“Mary Fortuna, Exhibition Director of the Paint Creek Center for the Arts, Rochester will present her impeccable, puppet inspired show called She Towers Above,” Annie VanGelderen, president & CEO of the BBAC, said. “Sara Sheldon will utilize recycled metal cans as her canvas in Rusting Brains Make Pretty Faces. The enlightening and nostalgic work of Sarah Tule will bring you back to simpler times while the painting students of Chris McCauley, including her current students and those with developed successful art careers, will be of interest to all.”

“I’m so happy to be in a show at a peer organization,” said artist Mary Fortuna, active in the Detroit art community for more than 20 years. “The BBAC exhibition space offers artists a great opportunity to work in a suspended culture with generous dimensions allowing me to creatively install things from the ceiling. I just love the response to gravity. I like to mix human and animal characteristics. Even as a kid, I made dolls and marionettes. I have some very large, new pieces for the show.”

The BBAC’s annual fine art fair will also happen during Mother’s Day weekend on May 11-12 beginning at 10 a.m. on both days and will feature more than 150 artists.
