DETROIT — Baltimore-based nonprofit Vehicles for Change Inc. will open it’s first location in Detroit on Tuesday. The company will accept and repair donated cars, awarding them to prequalified families for nearly $800.

“In our first national expansion of Vehicles for Change, we are especially excited to come to Detroit and help to empower financially-challenged families to achieve economic and personal independence through car ownership,” says Martin Schwartz, president of the organization.

The organization serves more than 400 low-income families each year, in the Maryland, Washington D.C, and Northern Virginia region. The model relies on car donations from the public and low-cost financing, utilizing community and social service partnerships.

It also guarantees families with low-interest 12-months car loans, allowing them to build credit. In addition, the nonprofit carries a six-month/6,000 mile warranty, which will give reliable service for at least two years. Car donors will gain a substantial tax advantage.

The nonprofit organization has awarded cars to nearly 5,000 low-income families since 1999.
