State Wine Competition Winners Announced

Published:

Winners of the 38th annual Michigan Wine Competition in East Lansing have been announced.

“This year’s sweepstakes flights were truly remarkable," says Amanda Danielson, owner and sommelier at Trattoria Stella in Traverse City. "It was extremely difficult to narrow down the reds in particular."

The Best of Class award-winners are: MAWBY/L by Mawby Tradition, (Sparkling); Boathouse Vineyards 2013 "Dry Dock" Riesling, (Dry White); Mari Vineyards 2012 Praefectus, (Dry Red); Boathouse Vineyards 2014 Semi-Sweet Riesling, (Semi-dry White); Karma Vista Vineyards 2014 Devil’s Head Red, (Semi-dry Red); 45 North Vineyard & Winery 2013 Riesling Ice Wine, (Dessert); Chateau de Leelanau Cherry Wine, (Fruit); St. Ambrose Cellars 2014 Vin Gris from Pinot Noir (Rosé).

Forty-eight of the states 115 wineries participated, entering nearly 375 wines in this year's competition.

Judges for the competition, which is only open to wine produced from Michigan grapes and other fruit, included Master Sommeliers Madeline Triffon, Claudia Tyagi, and Kathy Morgan; Doug Frost, who is both a master of wine and master sommelier; and notable wine writers, winemakers and wine educators.

The number of entries was lower than recent years due to reduced production over the last two winters.
