DETROIT — A startup bakery called Sister Pie has won $50,000 as the winner of the 2014 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest presented by the Detroit Lions.

“This year, we received more quality applications than ever before and all four finalists truly impressed not only us but the community, too,” said Vittoria Katanski, executive director of Hatch Detroit, a nonprofit that supports independent retail businesses in Detroit through funding, education, exposure, and mentoring.

Lisa Ludwinski, owner of Sister Pie, says the company aims to celebrate the seasons through assorted pies and will use seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients to create sweet and savory food — including pies, cookies, breads, and breakfast pastries.

The company started in 2012 by Ludwinski in her parents’ kitchen in Milford, and is now producing her pies and bake goods in a commercial kitchen in Detroit. The pies are available through her website, sisterpie.com.

In addition to the $50,000 grand prize courtesy of Comerica Bank, Sister Pie will receive legal, accounting and IT services from Hatch Detroit sponsors.

“This contest is a prime example of the tremendous drive and determination of entrepreneurs in Detroit,” said Michael T. Ritchie, president, Comerica Bank-Michigan. “Sister Pie has shown great resolve in proving they’re worthy of winning the 2014 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest and we are excited to see them open for business.”

“All four Hatch Contest finalists have displayed great commitment to their vision and passion for contributing to Detroit’s flourishing small business community,” said Detroit Lions Team President Tom Lewand. “We congratulate Sister Pie and look forward to the continued success of Hatch Contest alums, both past and present.”

Hatch Detroit was founded by Nick Gorga, a Detroit native who is passionate about the revitalization of the city and inspiring others in the community to create change.
