DETROIT — The Neighborhood Service Organization’s annual Handlebars for the Homeless bicycle tour will be Sunday. This fundraising event supports NSO’s commitment to helping thousands of metro Detroit’s most vulnerable citizens change their lives by ending homelessness.
All activities begin and end at the NSO Bell Building, located at 882 Oakman Blvd., Detroit.
“Bicyclists are people who get to know the nooks, crannies, and people of an area,” says David Rudolph, Handlebars for the Homeless founder. “When you’re in a car you can just roll up the window and pass the homeless individual. On a bicycle, you feel a part of your surroundings — you start to see things for how they really are. Hopefully those who ride alongside me will thereafter be moved to continue helping those in need.”
Check-in starts at 9 a.m., followed by a 9:45 a.m. gathering for final instructions and a 10 a.m. start. The 16-mile scenic ride is expected to last until 12 p.m.
The route will travel through the University of Detroit-Mercy campus, the redeveloped area of Livernois Avenue, Historic Palmer Park, the area of Highland Park known as “New England Town” because of its east coast street names, and the Boston-Edison Historic District. Participants will then return to the Bell Building for an optional guided tour of the building.
Riders will receive an NSO Handlebars for the Homeless T-shirt and refreshments.
Riders of all experience levels are welcome. Registration is $30 until the day of the event.
