DETROIT — The College for Creative Studies’s Center Galleries/Woodward Lecture Series will celebrate 15 years of providing exciting visual arts programming and compelling speakers. The season will begin from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 6 with a 101st birthday party for legendary 20th century avant-garde composer and writer John Cage (1912-1992). For the first time in Detroit, Center Galleries presents an exhibition of Cage’s drawings, watercolors, and prints.
“For 15 years, CCS’s Center Galleries and Woodward Lecture Series have served as cultural animators, providing great art experiences for our students and the people of metro Detroit,” said Michelle Perron, director of Center Galleries/Woodward Lecture Series -— also celebrating her 15th year at CCS. “This anniversary season is no exception, with a stellar line-up of exhibitions and visiting artists.”
Center Galleries is CCS’s main exhibition venue. Its sister program, the Woodward Lecture Series, is one of the most high-profile visiting artist programs in southeastern Michigan. The combined result is a forum for contemporary visual, literary and performance arts as well as lectures from distinguished artists, critics, curators and scholars. Some of the internationally celebrated artists and scholars who have visited CCS include artists John Chamberlain, Ed Ruscha, Elizabeth Murray, and Ryan Trecartin and CCS alumnus Tyree Guyton, critics Linda Yablonsky, Roberta Smith, Michael Kimmelman, and Peter Schjeldahl, and curators Klaus Kertess, Lynne Cooke ,and Anne Pasternak.
The 15th Anniversary Center Galleries fall season will include “Nothingtoseeness: The Visual Art of John Cage” (Sept. 7 – Oct. 19), and “Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller: Situations / S(h)ituations” (Nov. 9 – Dec. 14). Center Galleries is located on CCS’s Walter and Josephine Ford Campus, 201 East Kirby. All Center Galleries exhibitions are accompanied by additional exhibitions in Alumni & Faculty Hall and the Permanent Collection Gallery.
The 15th Anniversary Woodward Lecture Series will present the following: Laura Kuhn, scholar and director of the John Cage Trust at Bard College on Thurs., Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.; Lucy Lippard, author, critic, activist, and curator on Thurs., Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.; and Painter/Photographer Marilyn Minter, on Thurs., Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Lectures are free, open to the public, and take place in CCS’s Wendell W. Anderson Jr. Auditorium on CCS’s Walter and Josephine Ford Campus, 201 East Kirby.
