ANN ARBOR — Henry Ford Health System and Health Alliance Plan have joined together to be a premier sponsor for the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan’s 2015 annual Kidney Walk at the Detroit Zoo on May 17.

The Kidney Walk is the second-largest in the country and expects to raise $600,000 with 7,500 walkers. Ninety cents of every dollar raised through the Kidney Walk directly benefits the NKFM’s programs and services.

“We are very happy to be a sponsor of the 2015 Kidney Walk. Our organizations have a long history of working together and this new partnership with this premier organization takes our relationship to a new level,” says Nancy M. Schlichting, CEO of Henry Ford Health System. “The work of the NKFM to prevent kidney disease aligns very well with the system’s mission to improve people’s lives through excellence in the science and art of health care and healing.”

In Michigan, 1 in 9 adults have chronic kidney disease, and most don’t know it. Since there are little or no symptoms in the early stages, people are not visiting their physicians regarding the illness, and many are not educated on the risk factors or the detection steps they should take.
