Big Three Executives: Ford Motor Co. 2013

From January to September 2012, Ford posted net income of $4.1 billion, down from $6.6 billion in the previous year. Profits in North America offset a marked downturn in Europe, where Ford will shut three plants.

In model year 2013, Ford rolled out refreshed models to critical and consumer acclaim, including the Fusion, Taurus, and Escape. But many are watching the reception of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ, Ford’s first step in reviving its luxury division.

#01. William Clay Ford Jr.

Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board

A member of the company’s board of directors since 1988, Ford was elected chairman in September 1998 and took office on Jan. 1, 1999. He also serves as chairman of the board’s Finance Committee and as a member of the Sustainability Committee. He served as CEO from October 2001 to September 2006. Ford joined the company in 1979 as a product-planning analyst. He held a variety of positions in manufacturing, sales, marketing, product development, and finance. Ford served on the company’s national bargaining team during the 1982 contract negotiations with the UAW, became chairman and managing director of Ford Switzerland in 1987, and was elected to Ford’s board of directors in 1988. As head of Business Strategy for the Ford Automotive Group in 1990, Ford helped develop guidelines for establishing low-volume manufacturing plants in emerging markets. Ford is also vice chairman of The Detroit Lions Inc., chairman of the Detroit Economic Club, trustee of The Henry Ford, and on the board of directors of eBay Inc. He was elected a Ford Motor Co. vice president in 1994, and is the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford.

#02. Alan Mulally

President and CEO

Mulally joined Ford in September 2006, and has championed the automaker’s One Ford turnaround plan, which aligns the company’s efforts toward a common definition of success: one team, one plan, and one goal with a clear focus on the skills and behaviors required to accomplish those goals. He also has pushed for streamlining the company’s global design and engineering activities while enhancing the product lineup with cars such as the 2013 Ford Escape and Ford Fusion and the 2013 Lincoln MKZ, and boosting manufacturing productivity. Before joining Ford, Mulally was executive vice president of Boeing Co. and president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, with responsibility for all of the company’s commercial airplane programs and related services. Mulally serves on the President’s Export Council, which was formed in 2010 to advise President Barack Obama on export enhancement and ways to encourage companies to increase exports and enter new markets. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of England’s Royal Academy of Engineering. 

#03. Mark Fields

Executive Vice President; Chief Operating Officer

Fields became Ford’s COO in December 2012. Previously, Fields was president of The Americas and was responsible for the transformation of the company’s North American operations and its record profitability. He led the development, manufacturing, marketing, and sales of Ford and Lincoln vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America.

 

 

#04. James D. Farley Jr.

Executive Vice President; Global Marketing, Sales and Service, and Lincoln

In December 2012, Farley added operating responsibility as the senior global leader for Lincoln. He will work on the reinvention of Lincoln as a world-class global luxury brand. His previous appointment in 2010 marked the first time Ford has had a single global leader for marketing, sales, and service. Farley joined Ford in 2007. He previously worked for Lexus.

 

#05. John Fleming

Executive Vice President; Global Manufacturing  and Labor Affairs

Fleming is responsible for Ford’s 80 assembly, stamping, and powertrain plants worldwide, and provides engineering support for stamping; vehicle and powertrain manufacturing; material planning and logistics; Ford Production System, Manufacturing Business Office; and labor affairs organizations. Fleming previously was chief executive officer of Ford of Europe.

 

 

 

#06. Joe Hinrichs

Executive Vice President; President of the Americas

Effective in December 2012, Hinrichs took over the position held by Mark Fields and is responsible for all development, manufacturing, marketing, and sales of Ford and Lincoln vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and South America. Previously, Hinrichs oversaw all of Ford’s operations and partnerships within the Asia Pacific and Africa region, including Mazda.

 

 

#07. Stephen Odell

President; President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa

In December 2012, Odell became responsible for Ford’s Europe and Middle East operations under a new alignment. Odell was formerly a group vice president, chairman, and CEO of Ford of Europe. He leads the team responsible for producing, selling, and servicing Ford vehicles in 51 markets, as well as Ford’s Export Operations and Global Growth Initiatives.

 

 

 

#08. Robert L. Shanks

Executive Vice President; CFO

Effective April 2012, Shanks took over responsibility for Ford’s financial operations, including the controller’s office, treasury, and investor relations. Previously, Shanks served as vice president and controller. He was elected vice president, Operations Support, Finance and Strategy, Ford of Europe, and Premier Automotive Group in 2004. He also served as CFO for Mazda Motor Corp.

 

 

#09. Tony (Thomas) K. Brown

Group Vice President; Global Purchasing

Brown is responsible for more than $65 billion of production and nonproduction procurement for Ford operations worldwide. He had been senior vice president for Global Purchasing since September 2004. He has set a standard of working with trusted suppliers while fostering better relations. Brown joined Ford in 1999 from United Technologies Automotive.

 

 

#10. Felicia Fields

Group Vice President; Human Resources and Corporate Services

Fields oversees performance management, compensation and benefits, organization development, recruiting, and leadership and professional development. She is also responsible for corporate security and travel. She serves on the board of directors for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. Fields is one of several third-generation Ford employees.

 

#11. Bennie Fowler

Group Vice President; Global Quality and New Model Launch

Fowler is responsible for driving quality processes and discipline throughout the design and production of Ford vehicles. He is also accountable for new model launches globally, and for ensuring alignment with product development, manufacturing, purchasing, and marketing. With more than 30 years of experience, Fowler has held key positions in many of Ford’s business operations.

 

 

 

#12. David Leitch

Group Vice President; General Counsel

Leitch leads Ford’s litigation, tax, corporate, and intellectual property efforts and oversees the general auditor’s office. Since arriving at Ford in April 2005, Leitch and Ford’s Office of General Counsel have won numerous awards, including being named as Corporate Counsel magazine’s “Best Legal Department.” Leitch served in the White House as deputy counsel to President George W. Bush.

 

 

#13. J Mays

Group Vice President; Design; Chief Creative Officer

Mays is responsible for shaping the global design direction of the Ford and Lincoln brands, and for creating long-range strategic design visions that support the worldwide One Ford business model. Mays has led the development of many significant concept vehicles, as well as key production models, including the all-new 2013 global Ford Fusion and the 2014 Ford Fiesta.

 

 

#14. Raj Nair

Group Vice President; Global Product Development

Nair oversees all aspects of Ford’s product development system. Previously, as vice president of engineering for global product development, he oversaw all engineering for cars, trucks, SUVs, and crossovers for the Ford and Lincoln brands. He also was charged with developing new vehicles by leveraging common global platforms and vehicle components.

 

 

#15. Ziad Ojakli

Group Vice President; Government and Community Relations

Ojakli is responsible for Ford’s interactions with governments in 110 markets around the world. He’s also responsible for Ford’s federal and state government relations in the U.S., and community relations. Ojakli oversees Ford’s philanthropic arm, the Ford Motor Co. Fund. He is chairman of Ford’s political action committee and operates the communications activities of Ford employees.

 

 

#16. David Schoch

Group Vice President; President Asia Pacific

In December 2012, Schoch was named president Asia Pacific, leading the company’s growth for the entire region. Schoch had been chairman and CEO, Ford Motor China, where the automaker has invested more than $4.9 billion to introduce 15 new vehicles by 2015 and to double capacity. Schoch was previously controller, The Americas, and executive director, Ford Canada, Mexico, and South America Operations.

 

 

#17. Bernard Silverstone

Group Vice President; Chairman and CEO, Ford Motor Credit Co.

Effective Jan. 1, 2013, Silverstone replaced Mike Bannister, who retired. Silverstone will work to improve and expand Ford Credit’s business and profitability to support Ford’s growth plans. He is expected to continue building strong relationships with dealers, customers, and employees. He was named COO of Ford Credit in January 2012.

 

 

#18. Nick Smither

Group Vice President; Chief Information Officer

Smither is responsible for managing Ford’s worldwide information-technology organization. Previously, as executive director of Global Information Technology Business Operations, he was responsible for managing information technology services for North America, International Operations, and other units. Smither joined Ford in 1980 as an engineer for Ford of Europe.

 

 

#19. Joseph Bakaj

Vice President; Powertrain Engineering

Bakaj oversees worldwide engine and transmission engineering. He served as vice president, global product programs for Ford, and vice president, product development, at Ford of Europe, since April 2008. Bakaj was a member of Ford of Europe’s Executive Operating Committee and has more than 20 years of product development experience. He managed the development and launch in Europe of the 2006 Ford Galaxy and the acclaimed S-MAX model.

 

 

#20. Stephen Biegun

Vice President; International Government Affairs

Biegun leads all aspects of Ford’s international governmental relations, including trade strategy and political risk assessment. Before joining Ford, he was a national security adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Biegun provided analysis and strategic planning for the Senate’s consideration of foreign policy and defense and intelligence matters. He also worked at the White House as executive secretary of the National Security Council.

 

#21. Robert Brown

 Vice President; Sustainability, Environment, and Safety Engineering

Appointed in January 2012, Brown serves as Ford’s top environmental and safety officer. He is responsible for the company’s environment and safety strategy, policy, and performance, to ensuring that Ford meets or exceeds all safety and environmental regulations worldwide. Brown was previously vice president, sustainability, environment, and safety engineering, Ford of Europe. He replaces Susan Cischke.

 

 

#22. Marin Burela

Vice President; President, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co. Ltd.

Burela has held this position since 2010, but was elected a company officer in June 2012. He joined Ford in 1984 and has served in a variety of roles including manufacturing, marketing and sales, and product development. Burela worked as the executive director of global B cars for Ford of Europe, the director of manufacturing for Land Rover, and was the president of Ford Australia from 2008 to 2010.

 

#23. Ken Czubay

Vice President; U.S. Marketing, Sales, and Service

Czubay is responsible for marketing, sales, and service for Ford and Lincoln vehicles in the United States. He had been vice president of U.S. sales and marketing, responsible for oversight of day-to-day sales and marketing of Ford, Lincoln, and the former Mercury vehicles. Czubay joined Ford in 1970 as a financial analyst and went on to work in several positions for Ford,  Lincoln, and Mercury. He was an executive with the Suburban Collection in Troy.

 

#24. Raymond F. Day

Vice President; Communications

Day leads all global external and internal communications and public relations activities. His role includes building Ford’s reputation globally and reaching audiences that include customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, news media, communities, governments, and policymakers. Day has also served as executive director of Ford’s global corporate and automotive communications. Previously, he was a newspaper reporter and editor in Detroit.

 

 

#25. Roelant De Waard

Vice President; Marketing, Sales, Service, Ford of Europe

De Waard oversees all marketing, sales, and service personnel and activities in European markets. From January 2009, he was vice president of sales, Ford of Europe, responsible for 49 markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain and Russia. Previously, de Waard was chairman and managing director of Ford of Britain and vice president, Europe, Ford Customer Service Division. De Waard joined Ford in 1990 and is a native of The Netherlands.

 

#26. Kumar Galhotra

Vice President; Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa

Galhotra was named a company officer in May 2012. He joined Ford in 1988 as a design engineer, and has served in a variety of roles within Ford product development, including chief engineer for the Ford Escape and vehicle programs director for the small front-wheel-drive/rear-wheel-drive vehicles. He also worked in Japan as Mazda’s executive in charge of program management globally.

 

 

#27. Gary Johnson

Vice President; Manufacturing, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa

Johnson was elected an officer in May 2012 and will continue to lead the company’s manufacturing activities in his regions. He joined Ford in 1986 as a supervisor at Ford’s Auto Alliance International plant in Flat Rock and has served in a variety of manufacturing leadership roles, including director of manufacturing for engine operations, plant manager at Ford’s Michigan truck plant, and director of vehicle operations for various quality activities. 

 

 

#28. John Lawler

Vice President; Chairman and CEO, Ford Motor China

Effective December 2012, Lawler was named to his new position, after serving as CFO for Asia Pacific Africa, where he worked along side Hinrichs and Schoch to develop and implement the company’s growth plan in the region. Building on this extensive global operational experience — including being part of the team that led Ford’s North American transformation — Lawler now will focus on the world’s largest automotive market and Ford’s expansion in China.

 

#29. Paul Mascarenas

Vice President; Chief Technical Officer; Ford Research and Innovation

Mascarenas is responsible for leading Ford’s worldwide research organization based in Dearborn and Aachen, Germany. In this position, he oversees the planning, development, and implementation of the company’s top global technology objectives. Prior to his current role, Mascarenas served as vice president of engineering for global product development. Mascarenas joined Ford Motor Co. in 1982.

 

 

#30. Martin J. Mulloy

Vice President; Labor Affairs

Mulloy oversees labor policy and negotiations covering Ford’s hourly employees worldwide, and is responsible for health care management and collective bargaining with unions worldwide. Previously, he was executive director, North and South America labor affairs, where he led Ford’s 2003 labor negotiations with the United Auto Workers. Mulloy also has served as vice president, human resources, Ford of Australia. He joined Ford in 1979 as an industrial relations analyst.

 

#31. Stuart Rowley

Vice President; Controller

Appointed in April 2012, Rowley had been chief financial officer, Ford of Europe, since August 2010. Previously, he was CFO, senior vice president, deputy CFO, and operations controller of Volvo Car Corp. in Gothenburg, Sweden. Between 2000 and July 2004, Rowley was vice president, finance, at Ford Australia. He also worked in several management positions in product development finance and manufacturing finance in Britain and the U.S. before being appointed finance director in the Philippines.

 

 

#32. Barb Samardzich

Vice President; Product Development, Ford of Europe

Samardzich oversees all product development programs in Europe. Previously, as vice president, global product programs, she set the strategic direction for Ford’s global car, hybrid, crossover, SUV, and truck programs. She also served as vice president, powertrain engineering, where she directed global engine and transmission engineering. Before joining Ford in 1990, Samardzich worked as a thermal design engineer at Westinghouse.

 

#33. Neil M. Schloss

Vice President; Treasurer

Schloss has overall responsibility for Ford’s treasury operations. Most recently, he served as assistant treasurer. Schloss joined the Treasurer’s Office at Ford Credit in 1991, and held positions in both risk management and international financing. In 1995, he returned to Ford as manager, domestic financing, followed by the position of manager, international financing. Schloss also held a variety of positions at Ford Aerospace before rejoining Ford in 1990.

 

 

#34. James Tetreault

Vice President; North America Manufacturing

Tetreault leads Ford’s efforts to improve manufacturing flexibility and efficiency in North America as the company retools various truck plants to produce smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Earlier, Tetreault served as vice president of manufacturing, Ford of Europe, where he was responsible for vehicle and powertrain manufacturing operations, among other duties. He  has held several management positions in Ford’s North American facilities.

 

 

#35. Hau Thai-Tang

Vice President; Engineering, Global Product Development

Thai-Tang was named to his new position in April 2012. He oversees engineering for car, truck, SUV, and crossover vehicles for the Ford and Lincoln brands. He had served as executive director, global product programs. Earlier, as director, product development, Ford South America Operations, Thai-Tang developed vehicles for the South American market and led the development of FSAO as an engineering center for Ford in the Americas.

 

 

#36. Frederiek Toney

Vice President; Global Ford Customer Service Division

Toney works directly with hundreds of Ford dealerships around the world and reports to Ken Czubay, vice president, U.S. marketing, sales and service. Toney joined Ford in 2000 and has held several leadership positions in logistics, operations, and parts and service. Most recently, Toney served as executive director, global material planning and logistics. Before joining Ford, Toney worked for Caterpillar and American Honda.

 

#37. Jeff Wood

Vice President; Manufacturing, Ford of Europe

Since June 2012, Wood has had direct responsibility for Ford’s manufacturing operations in Europe. Since joining Ford as a plant engineering supervisor at Ford’s Norfolk Assembly Plant in 1988, Wood has held a variety of leadership positions including director for global manufacturing quality, plant manager of Ford’s Michigan Truck Plant, and director of manufacturing for truck operations. He also served as product development director for the electronics division.
