SOUTHFIELD — AIAG has hired Scott Gray and Mike Down as senior quality managers for its quality initiative team, the not-for-profit, member-supported organization announced today. With more than 60 years of combined experience in quality processes, the pair will help AIAG members manage quality in their global automotive supply chains, especially in the sub-tier, where the increases in production are causing a strain.

“Adding the quality expertise of Scott and Mike to the team elevates AIAG to a new level of insight and implementation of practical solutions for our member companies,” Joel Karczewski, the AIAG vice president of business development, said. “As the auto industry is quickly expanding manufacturing output, it must maintain a high level of quality through the supply chain, and Scott and Mike will immediately bring value in facilitating quality practices and processes.”

Gray and Down join quality initiatives program manager Karen Whitmore in the management of the AIAG Quality Steering Committee, which addresses and provides strategic direction on critical issues that include special process assessments, effective problem solving and warranty management.

Gray, a former member volunteer at AIAG who served as chairman of the board of directors in 2005, most recently was president of Gray’s Quality Services, a Detroit-area quality engineering and process improvement service provider. He previously served as senior vice president, corporate quality at Eaton Corp., with responsibility for leading enterprise-wide quality improvement strategies and performance. He has also held quality and engineering roles with Freudenberg-NOK General Partnership, Borg-Warner Automotive, Medeco Security Locks, AVEX Electronics, Motorola, and General Motors’ Buick Motor Division. Gray holds a BA in industrial engineering from Kettering University in Flint.

Down, also an active volunteer at AIAG, has worked in the quality field for 36 years, 32 of which were spent at General Motors. While at GM, Down held a variety of positions, including quality engineer/analyst, supervisor, staff statistical analyst, and supplier quality analyst, and he worked on the application of FMEA on advance vehicle and powertrain development. He has a bachelor’s degree in industrial management and a master’s degree in applied statistics from Oakland University
