STANWOOD, MI, Feb. 14, 2011 — With a new focus on future growth, The Resorts of Tullymore & St. Ives has named a chief executive officer steeped in the challenges of resort operations in northern Michigan.
The new CEO, Terry Schieber, is a familiar face on the state’s resort scene and an executive with wide experience operating top national resort and residential properties.
Schieber is former vice president of ClubCorp Inc. of Dallas and has been in charge of operations for some of the country’s most notable resorts including Pinehurst, the Homestead in Virginia, Seabrook Island in South Carolina, Palmas Del Mar in Puerto Rico, Mount St. Anne in Quebec, and Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire. He was part of an investment group that bought Shanty Creek from ClubCorp and in five years as CEO of that property he is credited with developing it into one of the Midwest’s top golf and ski resorts until it fell victim to the state’s economic downturn several years ago.
He is a former chairman of the state’s Golf Task Force, a position he held as a member of the Michigan Travel Commission.
Schieber takes over management of the Resorts of Tullymore & St. Ives after a two-and-one-half-year-stint as vice president of resort and golf operations for the Oceanico Group USA, based in Portugal. He served as general manager for the company’s Little River Golf and Resort property in Carthage, N.C.
After leaving Shanty Creek nearly a decade ago, Schieber served as general manager of the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach for two years and held a similar position with the Pine Needles Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
“We are delighted to have an executive with Terry’s credentials come aboard as we move forward into the next stage of our development,” said Richard Marino, speaking for his brothers Robert and Ronald, who with their uncle Peter J. Ministrelli, are the owners of Tullymore and St. Ives. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring Terry home to Michigan.”
Kevin O’Brien who served as general manager and director of golf is no longer with the resort.
Despite the heavy snow and freezing temperatures outside his office windows Schieber said he was enthused at the opportunity to help the Marino’s and Ministrelli achieve their goals for the development.
Although the original plan for the development was to create a residential village and commercial space around the Tullymore golf course, the new focus will be on maximizing the resort potential of the Tullymore and St. Ives golf courses and facilities.
“My job is to coordinate and organize all aspects of the property, residential and recreation, and run it as a top flight resort,” Schieber said. “With the help of ownership we intend to make it the No. 1 golf resort in the Midwest.”
In three years of ownership, Ministrelli and the Marinos have transformed the two rural golf clubs and a 44-suite inn located west of Mt. Pleasant and north of Big Rapids into one of the state’s most alluring golf and real estate attractions.
Using their own money and resources from their construction and earth moving businesses, the group reconfigured the award-winning Tullymore golf club and 800 acres around it into distinct residential villages, complete with roads and utilities infrastructure. They built elegant models of custom single-family homes, condominiums, and an ultra-luxury Residence Club that allows owners who buy fractional ownership of a unit to vacation at similar clubs around the world.
The Tullymore course was designed by nationally acclaimed architect Jim Engh of Colorado and has earned numerous top awards. It was chosen as best golf resort in Michigan by Golf World magazine, and is ranked No. 15 on Golf Digest magazine’s list of the Top 100 public and resort courses in America. The magnificent two-year-old $7 million stone-and-glass clubhouse was selected by Golf Inc. magazine as the country’s best clubhouse for a public or daily fee course.
The St. Ives course, designed by Michigan’s Jerry Matthews, won numerous state and national awards when it opened in 1995. The refurbished French-Norman styled St. Ives clubhouse is a year-round sports bar and restaurant.
Ministrelli, one of Michigan’s most noted philanthropists, has donated tens of millions to fund hospital development, charter schools, and Catholic Church ventures. He is also a major builder of luxurious custom golf community homes in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, Ca.
