Happier Camper, a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of ultra-light retro modern recreational vehicles, today announced it will open a showroom and distribution center in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood by the end of the month.

The company offers travel and utility vehicles, including the HC1, which comes with a so-called Adaptiv modular interior, a rear hatch, a wide entry door, classic fenders, a honeycomb fiberglass floor, and large panoramic windows.

The showroom and distribution facility will be located at 1244 Beech St. (north of Michigan Avenue, west of the Lodge Freeway). As part of the opening, founder Derek Michaels has created a specialty HC1 Detroit Tigers inspired trailer in blue and orange.

I consider Detroit my home. Detroit is innovation, inspiration, and rejuvenation, (and) no other state has as much greenery in shoreline as Michigan,” says Michaels. “For Happier Camper, launching in Detroit is strategic for shipping trailers, sales to the east, and Canadian distribution — to build and scale in Detroit is to build and scale Detroit itself.”

At 1,110 pounds, the HC1 is made of double-hull insulated fiberglass and can be customized with various configurations. The standard HC1 sleeps up to five and is 72 square feet with 42 square feet of walkable space. There is storage space throughout and the trailer also includes panoramic jalousie windows, built-in stabilizers, advanced power and electrical components, and fits in a standard parking space and most garages. It can be pulled by most properly-equipped vehicles.
