FRAMINGHAM, MASS. — Ryan Knott of Lansing won first place in Staples’ “Make Your Idea Happen” contest, securing $15,000 to support his flat-track, women’s roller derby league that’s looking to revitalize the city of Lansing.

Knott’s Roller Derby Vixens was one of 16,000 entries competing for gift cards, cash, and consulting sessions with small business experts.

“We had thousands of great entries,” says Tim Williams, director of social media for Staples. “Our winners have creative ideas to build their businesses and improve their communities. We’re thrilled that we can help them make more happen with the tools they need to further their business and dreams.”

The competition invited entrepreneurs to share their big ideas for a chance to receive the products and advice to bring their businesses to life, Williams says.

The grand prize was awarded to Lisa Hiler of Norwalk, Ohio for When Pigs Fly, a retail store that generates donations to help aid struggling families affected by a terminal illness. Andrea Leiser of Mystic, Conn. won second place for her hat and accessories store, Little Hat Workshop, which creates hats for people with cancer.
