Engineering Society of Detroit Names New Board Members

SOUTHFIELD — The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) has appointed six new members to its board of directors effective, bringing the total board members to 28.

The new members are:

  • Larry Alexander, president and CEO, Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau
  • Cindy Estrada, vice president, International Union, UAW
  • Farshad Fotouhi, Ph.D., dean, College of Engineering, Wayne State University
  • Alex F. Ivanikiw, AIA, LEED AP, senior vice president, Barton Malow Co.
  • Charles T. Robinson, PE, LEED AP, president and CEO, Albert Kahn Associates Inc.
  • Stephen Schultz, vice president, engineering and chief technology officer, BAE Systems

Alexander is president and CEO of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau  and a 30-year veteran of the hospitality and tourism industry. His introduction of a 10-year tourism vision for the region led to several efforts now well under way to achieve regional beautification; service training of hospitality industry workers; and, infrastructure improvements, including a critical review of regional facility space.

Estrada was elected UAW’s vice president on June 16, 2010 -— the first Latina to serve in that role. A member of UAW Local 174 in Romulus since 1995, Estrada previously served as director of the union’s National Organizing Department. Appointed in 2008 by then-UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, her responsibilities included directing the union’s organizing staff in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. She joined the UAW international staff in 2000.

Fotouhi became the 11th dean of the Wayne State University College of Engineering in 2011. He joined WSU’s Department of Computer Science faculty in 1988 and was appointed chair in 2004 after serving as associate chair. Fotouhi received a WSU College of Science Teaching Excellence Award in 1996 and several Best Paper Awards at various national and international conferences. Before joining WSU, he was a faculty member of the Michigan State University Lyman Briggs College.

Ivanikiw is senior vice president at the Barton Malow Co., where he has been for more than 20 years. He is responsible for all work acquisition including business development, marketing, and pre-construction activities. As a member of Barton Malow’s board of directors, he is involved in developing long term vision, company policy, and overall financial performance of the company.

As Kahn’s ninth President, Robinson is responsible for all of the firm’s professional services. He joined the firm in 1969 and has held numerous technical and administrative positions of increasing responsibility. Prior to becoming president, Robinson served as executive vice president of Kahn since 2004, senior vice president and director of engineering since 1996, and has been a corporate board member since 1989.

Schultz is vice president of engineering and chief technology officer for the land & armaments sector. In this role, he is responsible for leading the engineering function and sector technology strategy. He joined BAE Systems in September 2011 and is based at the Sterling Heights site.
