Chesterfield Digital Cinema 16 in Chesterfield Township will spend $2.5 million by adding a new lobby floor, carpeting, and paint, while all of the seats will be replaced with electronically reclining chairs.

“We are very excited about this renovation at our Chesterfield location and are currently taking a hard look at our other locations to perhaps undertake the installation of the electric recliners” says Mike Mihalich, CEO and founder of Bloomfield Hills-based MJR Digital Cinemas, which owns and operates nine theaters in metro Detroit.

The new seats at Chesterfield will have reclining backs and rising leg rests. After the renovation, the theater will have about 1,300 seats across the 16 screens, down from 3,000 seats. Screen sizes in five of the auditoriums will also be enlarged.

According to Dennis Redmer, vice president of operations for MRJ Theaters, there are no plans to raise ticket prices.

Work is expected to begin in August, and is expected to be completed by November. The theater will remain open throughout the renovation.

Chesterfield Digital Cinema, at 23 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, was built in 1995 as a 12-screen theater. It was later expanded into a 16-screen theater. MJR Digital Cinemas also has locations in Adrian, Brighton, Clinton Township, Sterling Heights, Southgate, Troy, Waterford Township, and Westland.
